Active Sports Therapy - Sports and Injury Rehabilitation

How a Sports Therapist Treats Injuries

At Active Sports Therapy, we follow a structured approach to injury treatment and rehabilitation to ensure a safe and effective recovery. Our treatment protocols align with the standards of the Sports Therapy Association (STA) to ensure you receive the best care.

The Stages of Rehabilitation:

1. Acute Stage (0-72 Hours Post-Injury)

In the immediate aftermath of an injury, the focus is on reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation. Treatment during this phase includes:

  • Rest and Protection: Advising on appropriate rest and support to prevent further damage.

  • Ice Therapy: To reduce swelling and manage pain.

  • Compression and Elevation: To control inflammation and support recovery.

2. Subacute Stage (3-14 Days Post-Injury)

Once the initial swelling and pain subside, we begin gentle movement and light therapy to promote healing.

  • Manual Therapy: Gentle massage and mobilisation to improve circulation and prevent stiffness.

  • Stretching: Light stretches to maintain flexibility and prevent scar tissue formation.

  • Pain Management: Ensuring the client is comfortable and progressing at the right pace.

3. Rehabilitation Stage (2-6 Weeks Post-Injury)

This stage focuses on restoring strength, flexibility, and range of motion.

  • Strength Training: Exercises to rebuild muscle strength and support the injured area.

  • Balance and Coordination Exercises: To retrain the body's movement patterns.

  • Functional Movement Training: Preparing the body to return to daily activities and sports.

4. Return to Play (6+ Weeks Post-Injury)

The final stage involves preparing the client to return to full activity.

  • Sport-Specific Drills: Exercises that mimic the demands of the client’s sport or activity.

  • Performance Testing: Ensuring the client is ready to return to their pre-injury level safely.

  • Injury Prevention Strategies: Providing advice on maintaining strength, flexibility, and balance to prevent future injuries
